Hi,
I'm trying to connect to a GE Fanuc Versamx PLC, P/No IC200CPU001, using either straight through 9-pin serial RS232 cable to port 1, or 9-pin serial cable to SNP Adapter (P/No HE693SNP232R) to port 2. I'm using Proficy Machine Edition 8.0 which is fully licensed. I can only use Comm Port 1 on my laptop, as I only have access to 9-pin serial cables as I am currently offshore at the moment. The PLC CPU has only 2 communications ports, 9-pin RS232, and 15-pin RS485.
The problem I have is I don't have the original configuration code so I'm trying to lift the running code from PLC for a back-up. I'm unsure if the connection settings were changed on the original configuration. I have made hardware configuration within PME with the CPU as P/No IC200CPU001, validate target, and when I try to go online to target the connection times out after multiple retries.
I have tried setting Port 1 and Port 2 on the CPU hardware configuration to different baud rates, parity, stop bits etc, but still having issues connecting. The CPU knows that there is a connection trying to be established, as the Port 1 or Port 2 LED's will illuminate on each try of connection, but extinguish after a small period until next retry of connection.
I have also tried disabling then enabling Comm Port 1, and also allocating to different Comm Port to see if this has any effect, but no change.
I'm unsure if it's something I'm needing to set up within Proficy Machine Edition, or if it's due to the serial cables/adapters, Comm Port setup on laptop, or something else that I've not thought of.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Introduction: GE Fanuc 90-30 Troubleshooting Guide – Testing a Genius Bus Controller This troubleshooting guide is a test of a Genius bus controller, an. There are two ways to test it and configure it in Proficy Machine Edition. Illustrated is an IC693CHS397, 5-slot rack powered by an IC693PWR330 power supply and an IC693CPU374 plus processor. Also illustrated for this test is an IC660BBA020. You don’t have to have this specific Genius block, but it is illustrated because it has both inputs and outputs and are needed for the illustration. Also illustrated is the IC660HHM501 handheld monitor. Step 1: In Proficy Machine Edition Open New File and Select Main Rack To begin go into Proficy Machine Edition for a moment.
Open up a brand new file and select a main rack. Switch to the CHS397, 5-slot rack, PWR330, and CPU374 plus. In slot number two is the BEM331. You should see the same physical configuration in front of you that you’ve got in your Proficy Machine Edition software. You’ll do two configurations.
Step 2: Navigate to CPU Settings First, with slot number 1, CPU374. If you double click on slot number one, the tab will pop open so that you can make adjustments to the settings of the CPU. Under settings and under subcategory parameters the fourth selection from the bottom is key switch run stop.
Key switch run stop activates so when the processor is in run mode and you turn it on, it goes into run mode, but you are able to shut it off from the processor. Step 3: Configure BEM331 Now you should have that set as enabled. And the next thing you do is to double click on slot number two to configure your BEM331. And under the device type, for this particular configuration, the way it is configured, the hand held monitor, the Genius block, is as a 4 analog input, 2 analog output serial bus address. Which is SBA number 1, just for simplicity sake. Step 4: Test Genius Block Bus vs.

Genius Block BBA020 So.the first thing you’re going to do to test this is to test the Genius block bus controller against the Genius block, BBA020. Currently the block is powered up and it’s okay. There’s only one LED on. The I/O enabled circuit is not on right now. There’s a serial cable connection that’s terminated with a 150 ohm resistor.

At the other end of that serial is the actual genius bus controller. If you look, screw 4 is going to serial 1 and screw 6 is going to serial 2, and again you have it terminated with a 150 ohm resistor and shielded.

Your shield cable is on number sixteen. Your shield cable is shield in on the Genius block. Step 5: First Test In this illustration the Genius block has been configured using the handheld monitor as a serial bus address number 1 or block number 1.
What you’re looking for is two things when you are using a Genius block for this test. First thing is that when you turn the key into the on position, you should get an I/O enabled LED. This tells you that the Genius bus controller is actually communicating now with the genius block when you’ve turned this switch on.You should have an IO enabled LED on. The second part of the test, more importantly, is whether the Genius block in your particular case is analog in and analog out. And the purpose for that is that when you touch the analog input with voltage, you should be able to see that voltage being read through the analog input, through your default analog input tables. So that tells you that you’re able to put a power source here, 0 to 10 volts, and you are able to see that value go through the Genius bus controller to the Proficy Machine Edition.
Then that verifies that that part is working. The other thing you want to do is the analog output.
You can do the reverse effect, meaning are you able to put a value in the analog output table and read it through the voltage out of the Genius Block itself. And that way you’ll know it can communicate both ways. It can tell the Genius Block what to do and the Genius Block can send a signal through the genius bus controller, the BEM331, to Proficy Machine Edition. So that is the first way to test it and that is a pretty thorough and complete way to test it. Step 6: Second Test The second way to test it is using UMK-SE11,25-1 from Phoenix Contact.
